Bedroom Wall Decor Ideas: Subjects, Sizes and Frames

Start Above the Bed

The wall above the headboard is where most bedroom art goes. Centre the piece on the bed rather than on the wall, leave 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10 in) between the headboard and the bottom of the frame, and aim for about two-thirds of the bed's width. If your bed sits under a window, look at the wall facing it instead: that's the one you'll see from your pillow.

Which Size Above Which Bed?

• Single bed (90 cm, 3 ft): one 70 x 50 cm (28 x 20 in) landscape print, or a 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 in) portrait poster.
• Double bed (135 cm, 4 ft 6): one 80 x 60 cm (32 x 24 in) print, or two 40 x 50 cm (16 x 20 in) prints side by side.
• King-size bed (150 cm, 5 ft): one large 100 x 70 cm (39 x 28 in) landscape print, or two 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 in) posters.
• Super king bed (180 cm, 6 ft): two 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 in) posters spaced a little apart, or three 40 x 50 cm (16 x 20 in) prints in a row.
• Above each bedside table: a 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 in) print, ideally one of a matching pair.

Choose the Mood Before the Subject

• Restful: quiet abstract prints, mountain ridges and nature and landscape posters, or botanical prints in muted greens. A palette of beige or blue posters keeps the room soft.
• Warm, with character: Matisse prints such as Large Red Interior or Reader on a Black Background, and the Roman frescoes of Pompeii and Stabiae, like Flora gathering flowers.
• Personal: literary posters with lines from Rimbaud or Baudelaire, or love posters for a shared bedroom.
• Meditative: yoga and zen posters, for a room that doubles as a quiet corner.

Loud, high-contrast images can make a bedroom feel restless; they are usually better in a hallway or a study. For a child's room, see our kids and nursery posters.

Frames, Paper and Safety

Every poster is printed on museum-grade paper. Framed posters arrive behind shatterproof plexiglass rather than glass, a sensible choice above a bed, in black metal, white oak or natural oak, ready to hang: you only pay for the frame, the framing itself is free. Oak softens a room full of linen, wood and plants; black metal sharpens a monochrome or modern bedroom. For a matching pair above the bed, have a look at our poster sets.
