Matisse was captivated by windows. He returned to them time and again, and this 1918 scene is among his gentlest. The shutters stand open, a green plant edges into view on the right, and below the sill a pink beach, scattered with tiny dark figures, slopes towards a lilac sea. A little boat rests on the horizon. Nothing more is needed.
The paint is laid on thickly, with a slightly coarse finish that stops the scene feeling too sweet. Pinks, mauves and pale blues blend like the colours seen on a hazy morning by the coast.
Hang it where there’s no view outside, perhaps in a bedroom, bathroom or compact home office. It offers the feel of another window, whether you live in a London flat or a cottage by the coast.
