In the summer of 1887, Van Gogh often walked from Montmartre towards Asnières, a riverside suburb where Parisians went rowing and picnicking. He painted beside the Seine, using a lighter palette than ever before.
A row of young trees traces the riverbank. Sunlight turns the path almost white, the water is a gentle blue, and a solitary figure in a dark jacket walks off to the right. Short, distinct brushstrokes shape the foliage, a technique he had taken up after meeting the Neo-Impressionists in Paris.
This is an easy painting to live with. It captures the feel of a long, warm afternoon, and would sit well in a peaceful bedroom or a hallway in a British home that gets little daylight. The poster is available in several sizes. You’ll find more scenes from Van Gogh’s Paris years in our Van Gogh art prints and posters collection, and our article tells the story of his time with Theo in Paris.
