The Mediterranean, June 1888. Van Gogh had travelled to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to see the sea. He told Theo that its colour was like that of a mackerel, constantly shifting until it was hard to say whether it was green, violet or blue.
This seascape captures that changeable colour. Waves sweep towards us in thick bands of emerald, turquoise and ultramarine, crowned with white foam. A fishing boat with white sails sits on the horizon, with two more further out. The paint is so heavily applied it almost seems sculpted, and grains of beach sand are said to remain embedded in the original canvas.
With its fresh, breezy feel, this print suits a bathroom, a seaside home or a bedroom, from a Brighton flat to a coastal cottage. It’s available as a poster in several sizes.
