We see the scene from a distance. Schloss Kammer is partly concealed by greenery, its cream-coloured walls and dark roofs just visible, while towers rise on the left. A small boathouse rests by the water. Below, the lake fills the painting, its deep green surface crossed by long, pale reflections of the façade.
This is the first of Klimt’s paintings of the castle, created in 1908–1909. In 1910, he moved closer, giving the building the whole canvas. Here, the water remains the focus, lending the scene a calm, almost drowsy mood. The painting is held by the National Gallery in Prague.
It suits a living room or home office, particularly alongside dark green or wooden furniture. You can choose from several sizes, with or without a frame. The later, brighter version hangs alongside it in our Gustav Klimt collection.
The summers at Attersee and the castle feature in our journey through Klimt’s world.
