Nothing but sea and sky. The waves fill the lower half of the canvas in short horizontal strokes of green, turquoise and pink, and above the horizon the sky is streaked with candy-pink, lemon yellow and lilac. No boat, no cliff, no figure.
Monet painted it at Pourville in 1882. Most of his seascapes from that summer include a cliff or a beach as an anchor; here he simply faced the open water at sunset and let the colours do the work. The result is surprisingly modern, almost an abstract composition in two bands.
Calm and colourful, it is a lovely choice for a bathroom, a bedroom or above a bed. Our Monet posters include his other views of the Normandy coast, and our article on Monet tells the story of that summer by the sea. Several sizes, framed or not.
