The castle is painted yellow, its roof red, while the trees in front are so round and dense they nearly obscure the windows. Below, the scene is echoed in the lake, softened into vertical reflections.
Klimt painted Schloss Kammer on several occasions between 1908 and 1912. For this third version, dating from 1910, he brought the building closer, cropped out the sky and made the façade a flat, sunlit backdrop. He often worked from the water or the opposite bank, framing the view through a telescope. This helps explain the slightly compressed perspective.
Calm and summery, this painting would sit comfortably in a living room or dining room, from a London flat to a country home. It comes in several sizes, with an optional frame. You can also find the earlier Water Castle, painted from further away, in our collection of Klimt posters.
The castle, the lake and those long summers spent with Emilie Flöge feature in our article about Klimt.
