The face is complete, with a gentle smile. Everything else remains in pencil: the long dress, the hands and the figure’s outline, set against a backdrop bursting with pink, red, blue and violet flowers.
Maria Munk, known as Ria, died in 1911 at a young age. Her family commissioned Klimt to paint her portrait after her death, and he worked on several versions. This final one, begun around 1917, was still in his studio when he died in 1918. The contrast between the bright blooms and the unfinished figure lends the painting a fragile quality, like a memory slowly taking shape.
A subtle choice for a bedroom or peaceful corner. Available in several sizes, with an optional frame. In a London flat or a country home, its delicate palette sits beautifully in a restful space. Our Klimt poster range also features his unfinished portrait of Amalie Zuckerkandl, from the same final years of his life.
