Against a bright orange background, a thick black fur collar frames a turquoise blouse patterned with dark leaves. Johanna Staude gazes straight at us, her large, pale eyes set beneath dark hair. It is among the most colourful faces Klimt ever painted.
She posed for him around 1917, in the final full year of his career. The fabric, a design called Blätter, was created by Martha Alber for the Wiener Werkstätte, and Klimt clearly relished painting it. He died before completing the portrait, leaving some of the brushwork loose and sketch-like. Today, it hangs in Vienna’s Belvedere.
Graphic, warm and modern, it works well in a living room, hallway or home office with a taste for bold colour, whether in a London flat or a country home. Choose from several sizes and add a frame if you wish. Discover more of Klimt’s final portraits in our Gustav Klimt prints and posters.
