Friederike Maria Beer is at the heart of a battle. All around her, warriors with swords and painted faces charge into the fray, in a scene inspired by an East Asian vase. She seems entirely unconcerned. With her hands clasped, she wears a zigzag-patterned dress and a fur jacket turned inside out to reveal its colourful silk lining.
Both fabrics were made by the Wiener Werkstätte, and it was Klimt’s idea to turn the jacket inside out so he could paint the pattern. Beer was a young member of Viennese society who also sat for Egon Schiele. Painted in 1916, the portrait is now held by the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
Lively, joyful and rich in detail, this print makes a great talking point in a sitting room or home office, from a London flat to a country house. Available in several sizes, with framing options. Discover more of Klimt’s later portraits in our Klimt art prints.
