Klimt never completed this portrait, and that’s precisely what appeals to us. The face is finished, with dark hair, pale skin, a black ribbon at the neck and a white lace collar. Below the shoulders, the dress remains a pencil sketch on bare canvas, with a few pink and blue flowers dabbed here and there, as though he’d paused halfway through an idea.
Amalie Zuckerkandl was married to urologist Otto Zuckerkandl, and belonged to the circle of Viennese families who commissioned and collected Klimt’s work. He painted her portrait in the final years of his life; it was still in his studio when he died in 1918. Behind her, soft greens and yellows form a patchwork that feels more like a garden than a studio wall.
