Gold upon gold. Adele Bloch-Bauer is nearly enveloped by it, with only her face, shoulders and clasped hands rendered realistically. Her dress is covered in eyes, spirals and Egyptian-inspired motifs. Her dark hair and red lips provide a striking contrast.
Her husband, sugar magnate Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, commissioned the portrait. Klimt worked on it for around three years, completing it in 1907. The Nazis seized it before it was held by the Austrian state. After a lengthy legal battle, it was returned to Adele’s niece Maria Altmann in 2006, a story later told in the film Woman in Gold. Today, it hangs at the Neue Galerie in New York.
A striking focal point for a living room, whether in a London flat or a country home. Choose the size to suit your wall, with a frame or without. Her second portrait, painted in 1912, is also available in our Klimt prints and posters.
The Bloch-Bauer salon belonged to Klimt’s world. Read our article to take a closer look.
