Red dots stretch across the scene. Klimt turns a summer meadow into a sea of poppies, with daisies and blue flowers scattered throughout, the field rising almost to the top of the canvas. Two leafy trees merge with the grass, while a narrow band of sky above marks the horizon.
He painted this Mohnwiese in 1907. The tightly packed surface gives the work a woven appearance, reminiscent of textiles from the Wiener Werkstätte, the design workshops with which he was closely associated. Look closely and you’ll see that hardly any two dots share the same colour.
