A young woman in a long, dark dress plays a golden kithara, the harp of ancient Greece. A stone sphinx sits to the right, with a mask on the left. Behind them, the soft blue-grey backdrop is flecked with tiny golden sparks, like dust caught in the light.
Klimt painted Music in 1895, before the Secession movement and his golden period. The early signs of his style are already there: ancient mythology, decorative detail and a touch of dreamlike realism. He saw music as something close to magic, bound up with the old gods. A second version, Music II, was destroyed in 1945. The surviving painting is held at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
It naturally suits a music room, hung near a piano or record player. Available in several sizes, the poster can also be framed. Our Klimt posters and prints collection also features the singing angels from the Beethoven Frieze, at home in everything from a London flat to a country house.
