Two composed faces, a dish of pears and a cloud of pink roses sit around a blue-patterned tablecloth. In this celebrated domestic scene by Henri Matisse, colour tells the story. Patterns mingle, space is flattened and your gaze moves from the bouquet to the fruit dish, then to the small decorative box. It’s a glimpse of quiet home life, arranged with a painter’s confidence.
A leading Fauvist, Matisse brought bold colour together with decorative rhythm and assured lines. The floral wallpaper seems to converse with the table’s fabric. The tablecloth does rather steal the scene, and we don’t mind at all. Browse our complete collection of Matisse prints to create a considered display on your wall.
