Klimt first planned to call this painting ‘To My Critics’. He had just come under fire for the nudes in his university paintings, and this was his response: a tall, narrow canvas filled with water nymphs, flecks of gold and flowing red hair. One figure turns her back on the viewer.
He later changed the title to Goldfish. At its centre, a large golden fish with a round eye floats among the figures and deep green water. The portrait format draws the scene into a gentle, vertical flow.
There’s a cheeky side to this work, and it’s more playful than it might first seem. It suits a bathroom or bedroom, from a London flat to a country home. The poster is available in several sizes and can be framed. Discover more of Klimt’s water nymphs in our Klimt prints and posters.
