A thin fruit tree stands alone on the left, its branches drawn like ink lines against a pale sky. Behind it, a wide field of russet and purple stretches to a village and to blue hills softened by haze. A haystack can just be made out among the houses.
Monet had lived in Giverny for four years when he painted this field in 1887. He was beginning to look at the same few places at different times of day, and the light here is that of a misty morning, when colours are still muted and the distance turns blue.
Its graphic tree and soft palette work well in a contemporary living room or a calm office. More views of the Giverny countryside are part of our Monet art prints. To understand why he never left the village, read our Monet article. Several sizes, framed or not.
