The famous footbridge crosses the picture from side to side, a pale green arch over a pond covered with floating lily pads and small pink and white flowers. Behind it, weeping willows and dense foliage close off the sky completely. There is no horizon, only green.
Monet had the bridge built over the pond he dug at Giverny in the 1890s, inspired by the Japanese prints he collected. In 1899 he painted it a dozen times from almost the same spot. This version, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is one of the most loved of the series.
