Grey-blue trunks, dozens of them, rise from a forest floor strewn with dry, orange leaves. The trees stand so close that the woodland forms a screen, with just a few slivers of light visible behind.
Buchenwald I dates to 1902, when Klimt was also creating his grand allegorical paintings in Vienna. In the forest, his pace seems to slow. There is no gold or symbolism to unravel here, just the contrast between upright trunks and the warm, speckled ground. The painting is held at the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden.
We think it works beautifully in an office or a living room with plenty of wood, as you might find in a British home. Choose your preferred size, with or without a frame. If this woodland scene appeals to you, our Klimt art prints also feature the birch forest he painted the following year, in quite different light.
