A lone poplar rises, tall and dark, beneath a sky on the brink of a storm. Thick clouds gather in shades of grey and violet, while the field below has faded to muted tones. At the tree’s base, almost out of sight, a little white chapel holds on to the last light.
Klimt painted this scene in 1903, during one of his summers at the Attersee in Upper Austria. He often framed landscapes as squares; here, that shape makes the tree seem taller still. There are no figures or narrative, only the hush before a storm, when the world falls still.
This work reveals a more sombre side of the artist best known for his gold-leaf paintings. It sits beautifully on a wall in a study or a living room with dark wood, whether in a Victorian terrace or a contemporary London flat. Our Klimt art prints also feature his lighter landscapes. This poster comes in a choice of sizes, with framing available as an option.
