Eve stands at the front, her long blonde hair falling over her shoulders and her expression serene. Behind her, Adam appears darker and asleep, his head resting against hers. At their feet, a leopard skin lies among scattered red and blue anemones.
One of the last canvases Klimt worked on, it was left unfinished when he died in February 1918. This accounts for the looser, more sketch-like passages at the bottom. Unlike the gold tones of his earlier period, this painting feels subdued and intimate. There’s no apple, serpent or garden, just two figures: one awake, the other dreaming.
Its slim shape suits a bedroom, a space between two windows or a spot beside a mirror. Choose a size to suit your wall, and add a frame if you wish.
Compare it with other couples in our Gustav Klimt poster collection, then explore the city where he painted them.
