Kitchen Wall Art Ideas: Themes, Sizes and Where to Hang

Pick a Theme for Your Kitchen

• Market day: fruit and vegetable stalls, a Parisian market in watercolour, oranges and the lemons of Sorrento, whose story we tell in our article on Sorrento lemons.
• Still lifes from art history: Matisse prints such as Still Life with Aubergines (1911) and The Dinner Table (1897), the apples and quinces Van Gogh painted in Paris in 1887, and a fruit bowl from a Roman fresco in Pompeii.
• Restaurant classics: pizza Margherita, spaghetti Bolognese, sushi and ramen, made for an Italian trattoria, a noodle bar or a family kitchen.
• Aperitivo corner: a Campari or Aperol spritz poster above the drinks cabinet; the full range is in our cocktail and wine posters.
• Coffee and breakfast: an espresso or a moka pot next to the coffee machine; more in our coffee and tea posters.

Which Size for Which Kitchen Wall?

• Above a dining table: aim for about two-thirds of the table's length. Over a 160 cm (63 in) table, that's one 100 x 70 cm (39 x 28 in) landscape print or two 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 in) posters side by side.
• Breakfast nook or bistro table: one 40 x 50 cm (16 x 20 in) or 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 in) poster.
• Open shelving and worktops: small 21 x 30 cm (8 x 12 in) or 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 in) prints, hung or simply leaned against the wall.
• Dining room gallery wall: three to six prints in the same frame finish, mixing 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 in) and 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 in), with 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) between frames.

Hang art so its centre sits about 145 to 150 cm (57 to 60 in) from the floor; above a table or sideboard, leave 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in) between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Steam, Grease and Sunlight

A kitchen is harder on paper than a living room. Choose a wall away from the hob, the kettle and the sink, and avoid direct afternoon sun, which fades colours over the years. A framed poster is the safer choice here: the print sits behind shatterproof plexiglass that a damp cloth wipes clean. Frames come in black metal, white oak or natural oak and arrive ready to hang; you only pay for the frame, the framing itself is free.

For Cafés, Bistros and Restaurants

A row of posters in identical frames gives a dining room a strong, consistent look, and a large 70 x 100 cm (28 x 39 in) print holds its own on a high wall. Mix an aperitivo poster near the bar with market or still-life prints in the dining area. Every order is printed in the United Kingdom, which helps when you need several prints at once.
