A rose-pink sky is what sets this harvest scene apart. Van Gogh painted it in December 1889, after spending weeks watching olive pickers near Saint-Rémy. He transformed the sky into sweeping curls of rose and coral.
Below, three women work among silvery-green trees: one stands on a ladder, another reaches upwards, and the third gathers olives at their feet. Their dresses are subdued, while the earth is a soft grey-violet. Van Gogh planned the composition with care, then painted it again, including a version for his mother and sister. He clearly considered it a finished decorative picture, rather than simply a study.
The combination of pink and green suits a bedroom, dining room or living room with warm wood, from a country cottage to a London flat. This design is available as a poster in several sizes.
