It may be hard to picture now, but Montmartre still had windmills on its hill in 1886. Some were used to grind grain, while others had been turned into dance halls and lookout spots. Van Gogh was Dutch, so the sight must have felt familiar, and he painted the mills several times.
Here, two mills stand above a jumble of gardens, fences and sheds beneath a pale, cloudy sky. A little flag flutters from the nearer mill. The palette remains subdued, with browns, greys and greens, punctuated by a few touches of red. Van Gogh signed the painting in red at the bottom right. It captures a village on the city's outskirts, just before it vanished, with a quiet appeal for homes across the UK.
This charming, slightly nostalgic print suits a hallway, kitchen or home office. Choose from a range of poster sizes. To see more views of Montmartre, browse the full Van Gogh collection. You can also read the story of Van Gogh’s arrival in Paris and the years that followed on our blog.
