A single white seaweed form unfurls across a red background, with a band of green behind it, like deep water glimpsed through a narrow opening. Matisse cut out the shape by hand in 1947, by which time scissors had largely taken the place of his brushes. Look closely and you’ll see four little white squares floating among the fronds, adding a hint of movement.
There’s a lot to be said for this pared-back composition. Just three colours and one shape, yet your eye keeps moving. Against a light wall, the red feels warm and graphic; in a bathroom or hallway, it gives a plain space a welcome lift. It also pairs well with the other cut-outs in our Henri Matisse prints collection, whether in a London flat or a country home.
The poster comes in several sizes, with or without a frame. Wondering how a painter in his seventies came to work with paper and pins? Read the story of Matisse’s years with scissors before choosing your format.
