A path cuts through young green wheat and disappears into a band of ripe, orange grain dotted with red poppies. Further back, dark green poplars stand in small groups, and the sky above is crossed by long white streaks, as if the wind had brushed the clouds sideways.
Monet painted the field near Vétheuil in the summer of 1881. The picture is now at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Look closely and you will see how few strokes he needs: the wheat is a mass of vertical dashes, the poppies single dots, the sky a few swirls.
A summery, open landscape for a living room or a kitchen. You will find other fields of wheat and poppies among our Monet prints and posters, painted from Argenteuil to Giverny. His years at Vétheuil are covered in our article on Monet. Several sizes, with or without a frame.
