A twisted trunk in red and brown rises through the middle of the picture, and the long branches of the willow pour down around it in strands of yellow, green and blue, so thick that they fill the whole canvas. The brushstrokes are long, fast and nervous.
Monet painted a series of weeping willows at Giverny at the end of the First World War. His stepson Jean-Pierre and his son Michel were at the front, and many historians see these trees as images of mourning for the dead of the war.
Powerful and expressive, it suits a contemporary living room, an office or a studio. Our Monet art prints include his other late works, from the Japanese bridge to the irises. Our article on Claude Monet tells the story of his last years. Several sizes.
