Spring 1886. Van Gogh had recently arrived in Paris, experiencing life in a major capital for the first time. From the heights of Montmartre, he painted the city spread out beneath him, its grey rooftops stretching towards the horizon.
The sky fills more than half the canvas, with soft clouds in shades of white, grey and blue. Beneath it, rooftops form a hazy strip, punctuated by a handful of domes and towers. The colours remain restrained, reminiscent of his Dutch period, yet his brushwork feels lighter and more open. There’s a sense of a newcomer’s curiosity.
This understated, atmospheric cityscape captures Paris in its everyday grey, and sits naturally in a living room, study or hallway in a British home. Choose from several poster sizes.
