Auvers-sur-Oise captivated Van Gogh as soon as he arrived in May 1890, particularly its old thatched cottages, which were already becoming uncommon. He returned to the village in his paintings throughout his final two months.
In this scene, red, orange and slate-blue rooftops gather along a hillside among green trees. Beyond them, fields rise towards a sky of gentle blues and whites. In the foreground, the plants twist through quick, lively brushstrokes. The result is a spirited, colourful portrait of village life, painted with the urgency of his final weeks yet free of sadness.
The square format pairs easily with other prints, or can stand alone above a desk or bedside table in a British home. Available as a poster in a choice of sizes, it sits alongside more scenes of Auvers in our Van Gogh landscape prints. You can also discover how he spent his final summer in our article about his years in France.
