Two steep hillsides in deep red, purple and brown meet at the bottom of a gorge, where the river Creuse flows towards us in silver and grey. The sky is overcast, and the colours of the slopes, heather and bracken, look almost like velvet.
During his stay at Fresselines in 1889, Monet painted this bend of the Creuse more than twenty times, under different skies. He complained about the rain and the cold, but the sombre, rich colours of the valley gave him some of his most powerful canvases. This one is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Rich and intense, it suits a living room with dark wood, an office or a mountain house. Our Claude Monet posters include the rapids of the Petite Creuse from the same trip. Our article on Monet follows his travels across France. Several sizes, framed or not.
