Before the sunny yellows of Provence, Van Gogh spent autumn 1883 in Drenthe, a remote province in the north of the Netherlands. There were peat bogs, low skies and few people. This small canvas dates from that time.
Two women bend over the heath as they work, their figures almost blending into the earth. A wheelbarrow stands to the left. Grey, heavy cloud fills half the scene, with just a narrow strip of light on the horizon. The mood is earthy and still, with a touch of melancholy.
It works well in rooms with subdued shades: linen, unfinished wood and charcoal walls.
