The hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole had a spacious, somewhat overgrown garden, which became one of Van Gogh’s daily subjects in autumn 1889. He could paint there whenever he felt up to it.
Here, tall tree trunks run from the top to the bottom of the canvas, bending and branching as they go. Beyond them, the leaves glow in shades of orange and gold, while a deep-toned cypress stands on the right. Yellow brushstrokes cover the ground. The scene is full of movement, as if even the trees are reaching upwards.
Its energetic vertical layout works well on a narrow wall or beside a bookcase, whether in a London flat or a country home. This poster is available in several sizes. You can find more works from his time at the asylum in our Van Gogh poster collection, while this article about his years in Arles and Saint-Rémy explores why the garden meant so much to him.
