Feel free to count the balconies. We lost track at around forty.
This photograph frames the entire face of a residential tower. Balconies form columns from top to bottom, each slightly offset, while decades of rain have left their mark on the concrete between them. Curtains hang behind some windows, plants sit on a few balconies and one appears to have a satellite dish. It’s architecture shaped by the lives within it, and you can sense that.
Housing blocks like this were built quickly and in great numbers after the war. Many came in for criticism, some were demolished, yet plenty are now cherished by residents and photographers alike. There’s something unexpectedly calming about their repetition, rather like looking at a page of handwriting from a distance.
In a home office or reading nook, it lends a sense of structure without demanding attention. The poster comes in several sizes.
