In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms in a house on Place Lamartine in Arles. Painted yellow, with green shutters, it won him over straight away. That September, he captured it and the surrounding street beneath a deep blue sky.
His house stands on the right, marked by its green door and shutters. Nearby, there’s a shop with a pink awning, adjoining houses, a handful of passers-by and, in the distance, a train crossing a bridge. He wrote to Theo about houses the colour of sulphur beneath a clear cobalt sky. It was a challenging subject, he said, which made him all the keener to master it.
This was where he hoped to establish a studio in the south, and where he welcomed Gauguin a month later. A meaningful painting for Van Gogh admirers, it sits naturally in a hallway or living room, whether in a London flat or a country home. Available as a poster in several sizes.
