Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, June 1889. From the east-facing window of his room at the asylum, Van Gogh looked out over the countryside before dawn. "This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big," he told Theo. That star survives in the painting, just right of the cypress, joined by a crescent moon and a sky that seems to churn.
The village is partly invented, its steeple more Dutch than Provençal. He painted the canvas from memory in his studio and was never convinced it had come off. It now belongs to the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is perhaps the best-known night sky in art.
We print it as a poster in several sizes. The deep blues are restful in a bedroom and bold in a sitting room. Pair it with Starry Night Over the Rhône from our Van Gogh poster collection, or read how he came to paint it in Saint-Rémy.
