Evening falls on the river. The houses on the left are already dark, the path along the bank is lost in shadow, and bare trees stand like black lace on the right. Only the water still holds the light, a silver strip reflecting a sky of torn grey clouds.
In 1869 and 1870 Monet lived near Bougival, west of Paris, often without enough money to buy paint. He worked on the riverbanks with Renoir and Pissarro, and this sombre canvas shows how much he could do with a few dark tones. The painting is long and low, so we print it with a light border that keeps the full panorama.
Moody and elegant, it suits an office, a hallway or a living room with dark furniture. It is one of the early works in our Claude Monet prints and posters. Our article on Monet tells how he lived during those lean years. Several sizes.
