A riverside garden full of red and pink flowers fills the foreground, so dense that the Seine only appears behind it as a band of bright water. A small boat crosses near the bank, a house with a tiled roof stands on the left, and on the far side the town and its church spire catch the evening light.
1877 was Monet's last summer at Argenteuil. Money had run out, and the family would soon leave for Vétheuil. Yet the painting shows nothing of these worries, only the flowers he loved and the river he had painted for six years.
Colourful and warm, it brightens a living room, a dining room or a bedroom. It is one of many Argenteuil scenes in our Monet art prints. Our article on Claude Monet tells what came after Argenteuil. Several sizes, framed or unframed.
