Under the triangular glass roof of the station, a locomotive stands on the left, half hidden in its own steam. Clouds of white and lilac vapour rise to the girders, and through them, the buildings of Paris appear in pale yellow beyond the tracks. Figures wait on the platforms in the warm, smoky light.
Monet rented a small flat near the Gare Saint-Lazare in early 1877 and painted the station a dozen times. He told the station master he was a well-known painter and had the trains stoked up to produce more smoke for him. This version is the most famous of the series and belongs to the Musée d'Orsay.
