A group of men circles a small courtyard, enclosed by high brick walls. A handful of tiny windows sit far above, letting in a little light they cannot reach.
Van Gogh painted the scene at Saint-Rémy in February 1890, based on an engraving by Gustave Doré in a book about London. He was living in an institution himself at the time. Many viewers recognise his red-haired features in the prisoner at the centre, who gazes out towards us. Blue-greens and greys dominate the palette, while the walls are rendered almost brick by brick, heightening the sense of confinement.
This is not a decorative painting in the conventional sense, but a compelling work often selected by those drawn to art with meaning. It works well in a study or hallway, from a London flat to a country home. Choose a poster in one of several sizes.
