November and December mark the olive harvest in Provence. In late 1889, Van Gogh watched workers gathering olives in the groves near the asylum, then captured them in several paintings.
Here, he uses an unusually delicate palette. A creamy white sky sits above trees in soft sage green, while grey-blue and sandy tones shape the ground. Two women in light dresses work beside a wooden ladder: one reaches into the branches as the other stands below. Their small, simply rendered figures feel woven into the landscape rather than placed at its centre.
We’re drawn to the calm, almost fresco-like softness of the scene. It sits comfortably in a bright sitting room or a bedroom decorated in light neutrals, much like the understated interiors found in British homes. Choose from several poster sizes. For a different view of the harvest beneath a pink sky, see Women Picking Olives in our collection of Van Gogh posters, and read the story of Van Gogh’s year in Saint-Rémy.
