In Nuenen, the village where his father served as pastor, an old church tower stood amid the fields, with the humble wooden crosses of the village graveyard around it. It was due to be demolished in 1885, so Van Gogh painted it for the last time.
Solid and square, the tower is painted in shades of brown and ochre, its spire already missing. Birds wheel across a grey sky, while a handful of crosses tilt in the grass below. Van Gogh said he wanted to depict how simply the peasants were laid to rest in the very soil they had worked, and how faith and religion crumbled as rural life carried on.
This sombre, earthy painting feels at home in a library or study, or in an interior with dark timber and leather, such as a traditional British home. It’s available as a poster in a choice of sizes.
