This is a painting about the act of painting. A young woman in a yellow striped dress sits before a small easel, paintbrush in hand, working in a room filled with sunshine. Behind her, a tall window looks out over the blue sea. A vase of pink flowers rests on the table, perhaps the subject she has chosen that morning.
Matisse painted La Séance du matin in 1924, during the heart of his Nice period. The room brings together many of his favourite details: patterned wallpaper, a striped blind and a terracotta floor with an almost orange glow. There’s no sense of hurry. It suggests a home where creative work and daylight go hand in hand.
We can picture it in a sitting room or a creative workspace, wherever you’d like a warm, unhurried feel. Choose from several sizes, with framing available if you wish. To discover more scenes filled with light and colour, browse our Matisse wall art.
