On the right, a woman in pale blue stands motionless, arms raised. To the left, a jagged pink shape darts towards her. Blue and black leaves drift across a cream-coloured background between the two figures. The knife thrower’s act unfolds entirely in cut paper.
This image comes from Jazz, Matisse’s 1947 book of circus memories and coloured shapes. Its appeal lies in the tension: nothing has happened yet, and nothing will, but you can sense the throw is imminent. Look closely at the small black square on the woman’s body, with a white leaf held in place like a target.
The palette is gentler than in many of the other Jazz plates. Cream, pale blue and black make it easy to live with, whether in a bedroom, hallway or above a desk in a British home. It’s available in several sizes, with the option to add a frame.
