In June 1888, Van Gogh climbed a low rise just outside Arles and surveyed the plain of La Crau, where wheat fields, hedgerows and farms stretched away towards the hills. He painted The Harvest over a handful of sessions, later describing it as one of his finest works.
This landscape unfolds like a story. In the foreground, a fence borders fields of green and yellow. Beyond it, a blue cart and haystacks sit among figures at work and farmhouses topped with orange roofs. The plain then sweeps towards low violet hills beneath a pale turquoise sky. Golden, ordered and full of activity, the scene captures summer at its most abundant.
Its broad, light-filled composition makes a striking focal point above a sofa or dining table, whether in a London flat or a country home. Choose from several poster sizes.
