A dark fishing boat with grey sails heels over in a heavy sea, spray flying from its bow. The waves are a deep bottle green, almost black, with sharp white crests, and two more sails lean in the distance under a dull grey sky. The letter H on the sail identifies its home port.
The young Monet painted this dramatic seascape around 1866 to 1867. Its strong contrasts and flat areas of colour owe a lot to Édouard Manet and to Japanese prints, and the high horizon makes the sea feel like a wall. The canvas belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Bold and graphic, it suits an office, a hallway or a bathroom with dark tones. Our Monet posters include his other early seascapes, by day and by moonlight. Our article on Claude Monet tells the story of his early years on the coast. Several sizes.
