A dense tangle of yellow, olive and moss-green strokes, in which the arch of the footbridge slowly appears, crossing the picture from left to right. Below it, the pond is only suggested by a few darker patches and touches of red. It takes a moment to see the subject; then it is impossible to unsee.
In 1919 Monet was seventy-eight and his cataracts had turned his vision yellow. He kept painting the bridge from memory and feeling as much as from sight, with large brushes and thick paint. These late works, once dismissed, are now considered among the most daring of his career.
Warm and textured, it suits a contemporary living room, an office or a studio. Compare it with the calm green bridges of 1899 in our Monet prints and posters. Our article on Monet's last years tells the story behind this change. Several sizes.
