Van Gogh did more than copy Millet. In February 1890, while at Saint-Rémy, he also painted this interpretation of a print by Honoré Daumier, the French caricaturist and painter he admired for his keen eye for everyday life.
Four figures sit together outside around a small table: an old man in a top hat, a man taking a drink, a younger figure in a red cap and a child. They appear to represent the stages of life, united by the same drink. Factory chimneys send smoke across the horizon behind them. Van Gogh recast the black-and-white image in shades of blue, green and brown, defining the figures with bold outlines.
This is an unusual, gently satirical Van Gogh with a story to tell. It would sit naturally in a dining room, kitchen or bar nook, whether in a London flat or a country home. The poster is available in several sizes. Explore our range of Van Gogh posters to discover more of his interpretations of other artists’ work.
