A small house with a red roof sits in a hollow of the cliff, halfway down to the sea. The slopes around it are covered in a soft tangle of pink, lilac and green vegetation, and beyond, the Channel stretches calm and milky to a horizon dotted with a few sails.
The cabin was built for customs officers who watched the Normandy coast for smugglers. In 1882 Monet stayed at Pourville, near Dieppe, and painted it again and again, from above, from below, in sun and in wind. The little building gave him a fixed point in a landscape of pure light.
Gentle and airy, it suits a bedroom or a bathroom, or a holiday home by the sea. Our Monet prints and posters include several of his Normandy cliffs from the same summer. To follow him along the coast, read our article on Monet. Several sizes, framed or not.
