Published in 1947, Matisse’s book Jazz is filled with circus scenes. The Codomas takes its name from a family of trapeze artists. But don’t expect to see acrobats here. Instead, you get the sense of a performance: two blue lines swinging like trapeze bars, a yellow net dotted with black squares and a wavy yellow ribbon crossing a green band, like a body suspended in mid-air.
An orange border, sprinkled with pink and violet leaves, frames the scene like a curtain around a circus ring. Each shape was cut from paper painted in gouache, then reproduced for the book.
It suits playful spaces, from a child’s bedroom to a colourful living room or studio. It’s one of the more cheerful designs, and sits just as comfortably in a London flat as in a country home. Choose a size, add a frame if you like, and explore the other Matisse cut-out prints from the same series.
The story of how illness led him to pick up a pair of scissors is quite something. Find out how Matisse began drawing with scissors.
