Two women stand at the top of a grassy cliff, one holding a red parasol, the wind pressing their dresses against them. Below and beyond, the sea glitters in turquoise and blue, scattered with white sails, and clouds race across a bright sky. On the right, a rock face drops straight into the water.
Monet spent the summer of 1882 at Pourville, near Dieppe, with Alice Hoschedé and the children of the two families. He painted the cliffs almost every day. This canvas, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, is one of the most joyful of them: the grass seems to move, and the figures are tiny compared with the space around them.
Full of wind and light, it brings summer to a living room or a bathroom. Our Monet prints and posters include more cliff walks from Normandy, and our article on his life follows him along the coast. Several sizes.
